Under-sink organizers: map the pipes before the bins
Under-sink cabinets contain obstacles that a simple width-by-depth measurement misses. A two-tier organizer may look compact but collide with a drain or keep a door from closing. A quick obstacle map helps you rule out the wrong format.
Draw the occupied space
Sketch the drain, supply lines, shutoff valves and hinges. Mark usable zones on each side without moving plumbing. A measuring tape and a piece of paper are enough; do not disassemble fittings to create room.
Check the travel of a drawer
A pull-out drawer needs a clear route out through the door opening. Its frame may fit inside while the drawer hits a hinge or door. Read the installation and travel dimensions on the actual product.
Choose a format for each clear bay
An open bin needs room for your hand and a straight lift or slide out. A freestanding two-tier organizer also needs clear space above its lower tray and beneath the sink bowl. A pull-out frame requires both an installation footprint and an unobstructed drawer path. Compare those requirements separately; the cabinet’s overall width cannot tell you which format fits.
An example around a drain
If a cabinet is 28 inches wide but the pipework divides it into two usable 10-inch bays, do not shop for a 28-inch-wide organizer. Measure the width, depth and lowest clear height of each bay and note access to the valves. A 9-inch-wide bin may be a candidate for one bay, but its handles and retrieval path still need checking. Repeat the calculator for each clear rectangle rather than entering the entire cabinet.
Prefer a smaller reversible solution
Try two existing containers separated around the pipework before buying a fitted frame. Leave access for inspection and maintenance. Avoid crowding electrical components or storing incompatible cleaning products together.
