Under-bed storage: a fit checklist before you order
The useful space beneath a bed is rarely one clean rectangle. A center rail, legs, carpet or a low side frame can block a container that appears to fit on paper. Check the route in as carefully as the space underneath.
Measure the entrance first
Measure from the floor or rug to the lowest obstruction along the route the box will slide. Check the side rail and the center support separately. Measure with the bed in its normal position; do not assume that lifting it each time is a workable routine.
Map separate bays
Draw the positions of the legs on the planning sheet. Treat the spaces between them as separate bays. Include the handle, lid and wheels when comparing a container's outside dimensions. Leave some working clearance rather than buying to an exact nominal measurement.
Fabric case or rigid box?
A fabric case can fold away when empty and suits clean, dry textiles. A rigid box may stack or slide differently and takes up its full shape when empty. Neither format is automatically moisture-proof or suitable for heavy objects. Follow the item and container care guidance.
A dimensional example
The linked IKEA SKUBB case is listed as 17 by 20 3/4 by 7 1/2 inches. A 7 1/2-inch entrance is therefore not a comfortable working fit. Check the current item measurements and allow space for handling. Use the calculator as a first screen, then test the footprint with scrap cardboard.
Slide it out before opening it
An 8-inch entrance and a 7.5-inch-tall case leave half an inch of total vertical room. With a half-inch allowance, that is exactly the screening limit. It does not establish that a hinged lid can open under the bed. Measure a second rectangle beside the bed where you can pull the whole case out, including the handle, before lifting the lid. On carpet, check the actual loaded container rather than assuming wheels will reduce the effort.
Store by retrieval frequency
Keep occasional bedding or off-season clothes together and label the accessible end. Everyday items usually deserve easier access. Avoid packing so much into a soft case that its height changes beyond the measurement you planned around.
